Alba sorry for vandalism, may be charged

Jessica Alba, who was in Oklahoma shooting a film, apologized Tuesday afternoon for getting involved with a group that plastered shark posters on electrical boxes, a bridge and a United Way billboard.

A total shark poster damage assessment is not available, but the amount involved will help determine if actress Alba faces criminal charges.

The vandalism is under investigation, Oklahoma City Master Sgt. Gary Knight said. If police determine it to be a felony case, it will be turned over to the district attorney. If investigators deem the “shark sniping” a misdemeanor, it will be given to the city attorney.

So far, investigators have not talked to Alba.

Under Oklahoma law, defacing or damaging property is a misdemeanor if the damage amount is less than $1,000, and a felony if the damage exceeds the $1,000 mark.

Oklahoma City spokeswoman Kristy Yager said Wednesday the city doesn’t own any of the damaged property, but she estimates somewhere between $500 and $700 has been spent in city labor to remove posters from two OG&E electrical boxes.

That is the only damage reported to police, and Yager said she doesn’t expect labor costs to pass $1,000.

Police said OG&E has not filed a report.

A shark conservation blog posted photos of Alba gluing a poster to the Bricktown underpass, which is railroad property, and another of her in front of a poster placed on a United Way billboard.

Neither the railroad nor United Way filed a police report.

United Way officials said it would cost $235 to put up a new shark-free billboard, but they said Alba’s attorney gave them the impression she would be making a donation to the local charity.

A message left with Alba’s attorney was not immediately returned Wednesday.
